Last night marked our 175^th Birthday with a star-studded black tie evening, celebrating not only this significant milestone but also the launch of a commemorative exhibition which brings to life the remarkable story of one of the oldest department stores in the world – celebrating our unique heritage and place in the heart of Australians.

David Jones was the first to revolutionise shop window displays in Sydney by removing overcrowded displays of goods and creating theatrical designs which captured the imagination of passers-by.

Intended as a visual symbol which needed no words to identify its association with David Jones, family legend maintains that it was inspired by the packaging on a bottle of Christian Dior’s Miss Dior perfume.

The opening of the elegant French Evening Room on the 6th floor of the Elizabeth Street store in 1928 heralded a new direction for David Jones, placing it firmly at the forefront of international glamour in Sydney. Many items of furniture were made with Australian timbers and supplied by Captain Francis de Groot, who famously and pre-emptively slashed the ribbon at the opening of the Sydney harbour Bridge in 1932.

David Jones has collaborated with leading Australian designers to produce a beautiful collection of limited edition products from fashion and accessories.  

In the 1902 Charles Lloyd Jones had visited top American department stores, such as Macy’s in New York and Chicago’s Marshall Field’s, and realized all that was about to change. ‘The highly skilled, intensely competitive advertising business we know today was just round the corner’, he wrote. ‘I had become fascinated by the possibilities of advertising as a career…’

The flamboyance and reverie of the 1970s British pop music revolution sets the tone for the Le Specs Stardust Collection.
